Summer Break

Summer is here...not technically, but for teachers it is! Spent a few hours yesterday at the pool in our neighborhood. It was the first time my wife and I have gone...we're looking forward to many an afternoon spent at this beautiful relaxing spot!

I went into the school for a couple of hours today to order some last minute items before our school goes down to a "no budget system". Why is it that when our school is truly progressing towards 21st century learning, our state government has to make billions of dollars in education cuts! Isn't it just ironic? Supposedly now our beautiful state of Colorado has now gone back to a 1989 budget for schools! Here's a list of some of the "technological" things that were going on in 1989 (http://www.thepeoplehistory.com/1989.html):
  • The first of 24 satellites of the Global Positioning System is placed into orbit
  • Nintendo begin selling the Game Boy in Japan
  • Voyager II passes the planet Neptune and its moon Triton and sends pictures back to earth.
  • The 486 series of microprocessor introduced by Intel.
  • Scientists pronounce 1989 as the warmest on record possibly a sign of the greenhouse effect
  • Florida and Virginia allow use of DNA genetic fingerprinting evidence as admissible
  • First release of Microsoft Office. which was a bundle of Microsoft's office applications, such as Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel , Dependent on the Version you purchased would depend on which applications were included

Tell you what, I'm going to guess that our students probably have more technology, information, and capability in their iPhone and iPods than NASA had altogether in the year 1989! Funding for education is a must...not an option!

Have a great weekend everyone!

Day 1 Post

I started my first 2 days of Summer Break attending Highway 21. It's a 2 day conference that focuses on 21st century skills in the classroom. Very inspiring! Let's quit using 19th and 20th century teaching/assessing tools and move forward. It's about time! Our students want it, need it, and most of all deserve it! Let's get them to create, explore, discover, compose, experiment, and be engaged!

Here's a movie my buddy Rob and I created...12 seconds long. Cool class project: www.12seconds.tv

Be Creative!
